Letter from the President

CUPE Local 1431 is made up of approximately 105 hard-working, intelligent and productive office and technical workers at Halifax Water. We keep the business running daily, by making sure that the calls get answered, the computer systems and software keep running, and seeing that the water and sewer pipes conform to regulations before they are in the ground, and once they are laid. We provide customers with exceptional water and wastewater services here in Halifax.

We had a big struggle during negotiations in 2015, which led to a labour disruption that lasted almost 9 weeks. In the end, we persevered and we protected our Defined Benefit Pension – we helped hold the future together for ourselves and those members who will come after us. I hope that each and every member is as proud of themselves and this accomplishment as I am of us. We came out on top, stronger than ever.

Thank you for allowing me to be your President for another 2 years, and allowing me to represent you all with this employer, with our affiliations, and with the public when necessary. As always, feel free to contact me at any time. Be well and stay safe!

Sincerely and In Solidarity,
Heather Corkum
